The other day, a co-worker asked me if I liked The Toadies, qualifying his display of taste by saying, “they’re trashy, but I like them.” Specifically, he pointed to Possum Kingdom, the Toadies radio tune.

Now, being the type of blogger that I am, I naturally searched on YouTube for the song’s music video, which I found, but unfortunately could not embed on this site. You see, Universal Music Group, who uploaded the video, has chosen to disallow embedding:

As a Google search teaches us, Universal and Google struck a content sharing deal just over a year ago:

YouTube’s deal with Universal Music Group is similar. The Web site has permission to host music videos by Universal artists, which include U2, The Killers and Black Eyed Peas.

Universal and its artists will be compensated with ad revenue for user-generated content that incorporates Universal’s music, the company said.

My hunch is that Universal also gets some of the revenue from ads posted on the YouTube pages carrying their content, so they don’t want people embedding the videos and thus not directing traffic to the page with the ad. Quite trashy and tacky from a user perspective.

Speaking of trash, the point of the post before that corporate digression. You see, when he said Toadies=Trash Rock, I said, “ah my friend, you must hear Royal Trux.” Then he did and he felt good. I was no liar.
