Saw Wendy and Lucy this morning with the male roommate. It’s a film that doesn’t aim to do much, but it hits its mark with great, subtle accuracy. Wendy Carrol’s tale definitely resonates with the continual news of an economy tumbling down. Here’s the HD trailer:

Arriving home after the film, my roommate rushed to the internet to read up on W&L and filmmaker Kelly Reichardt. In his studies, he found the great explanation of the film’s rating by the New York Times:

“Wendy and Lucy” is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). It has some swearing, a little drug use and a brief implication of violence, but no nudity, sex or murder. The rating seems to reflect, above all, an impulse to protect children from learning that people are lonely and that life can be hard.

Considering that Will Oldham scored this film about a dog gone missing, you probably thought I would have chosen “Come A Little Dog.” But I didn’t.
